Cut Day

As NFL teams make the first of two roster cuts within a week, it reminds me that football players need degrees and/or backup plans. Many of these players get full rides to college but yet not all take advantage of this to get a college degree. While I understand that college isn't for everyone but with the career life of a football player being 4-8 years, there has to be a plan B. ESPN, Fox, CBS, and the NFL Network only have so many seats at the already crowded anchor desk and not too many football players have marketable post careers. So here you are at age 30 and your career is over and you have nothing. Please please please college players get your degree so that you aren't the next TMZ so now he's bankrupt or here's his latest arrest.....

Fantasy football picks coming this week....

Football football football

As football season approaches two things come to mind for me:

Replacement refs sucks. I mean how can I spot calls on my tv at home and they can't call them when they are right in front of them.

Secondly, replacement refs means the NFL cares nothing about player safety. Why in the hell would you have refs who have been fired from the lingerie league and D2 if you wanted what's best for the players? Sorry league but I'm not buying what you are selling when it comes to safety.

Ok now that that's out of the way, I'm ready for fantasy time. This has got to be the best time of the year for me (behind Duke basketball. Go Blue Devils). This year I'm determined to not only winner but crush everybody in my wake including my daddy who I love dearly. Next week, I will start providing my list for each position to help those not as ready as me.

Finally, GO IRISH.......

Week 1 of NCAA Football

As the end of Week 1 of the start to the 2011 NCAA Football Season comes to a close, I'm reminded of a few things:

My beloved Irish (yes I was at the game and in the middle of the 1st rain delay) again will fall short of OUR expectations this year.  5 turnovers with 3 in the red zone isn't becoming of a BCS contender or ND for that matter.  Kelly better get it together soon or he too will be turned over....

Mother Nature is no fan of the football.  Two rain shorten games and two more in long rain delays within 24 hours.  I hope this isn't a preview of the season....

Boise State is for real and if they run the table, they better be in the Championship Game. On the other hand, Oregon was a fluke and we should thank LSU for showing us that.  Baylor and TCU was amazing and an instant classic and unfortunately for TCU they will be regulated back down to mid-major status.  RG III is going to be a sleeper for the Heisman this year if he continues to play like that.

When are we going to eliminate the "non-conference" massacres that happen every week.  I understand that schools like Kent State, SMU, and App. State agree to play because of the huge payouts but what are we learning about our potential national champion?  They can crush schools that they are suppose too crush...Why doesn't one of these schools setup to the plate and play Boise State in Week 1?  They do have open slots for the next few years...

Super 4 conferences...With the music chairs that seems to be happening within the conferences, it seems as if we are headed to four super conferences.  And the two victims of this would be the fans and 99% of college football teams.  The BCS is already unfairly geared towards major conferences as it is so what do you think would happen with just four conferences?  We would finally get our four game playoff that we have been screaming for but it would only include the four super conference's champs.  No Boise State, TCU, Utah, Hawaii, or my Irish (ok maybe in a few years they could be in this conversation for real).  Seems as if the BCS will find a way to screw us again...

Here's hoping that the remainder of the season is just a compelling as Week 1....

Till we chat again,

What's Old is New Again

So the Florida Marlins have hired 80 yr old Jack McKeon to manage for the rest of the season after the sudden "resignation" of Edwin Rodriguez on Sunday morning.  McKeon was the manager for their 2003 World Series (with Bartman's help they beat my Cubbies for the NL Pennant).  This makes Jack one of the oldest managers ever in baseball.  And so far the Marlins are 1-1.  But just how long can his tough old school love motivate these over paid players?  I never believed in changing managers in the middle of the season because when you get down to it the players still have to make the pitches, hit the balls, and make the plays to when the game.  I hope that Jack does well and makes the players respect the game and all of those who played before them.

So here's to Jack who just won't go into that damn retirement and collect his AARP in peace.

Life of a Cubs Fan

Tonight was suppose to be the night Jeter got his 3000 hit. But with him on the DL, ESPN still had no choice but to put my Cubbies on Sunday night in Primetime. I hope they don't disappoint me and have a horrible showing...but as a Cubs fan, I prepared for the worst and praying for the best...Go Cubbies Go

As I sit here and watch Rory McIlory walk the 18th hole on the his way to winning his 1st major in historical fashion, I wonder if he is going to thank Tiger during his speech. Golf was a sport for the rich that had little to no fan fair before Tiger and now thanks to him the prize money is huge and golf can actually lead on Sportcenter. Let me be clear, I'm a huge Tiger fan and I can't watch for him to return but I also like golf. I just wonder if all of this winners understand that Tiger is the reason they make millions, get sponsorship deals, and just are regulated to the 5 page in the sports section of the paper. Golfers owe Tiger a lot...

Congrats Rory, enjoy every minute of it because this could be the beginning of a wonderful future for you...Just remember that without Tiger (the man you called out last year during the Ryder Cup because he wasn't the Tiger of old but he was still good enough to beat you in Singles) today would mean nothing...

P.S. Good comeback from that horrible Masters collapse
